South Africa kicked off their ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a convincing six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Group D, New York. Concerns about the New York ground's drop-in pitches were highlighted as Sri Lanka collapsed to their lowest T20 total of 77 with only three batters reaching double figures. Kusal Mendis top-scored with a 30-ball 19. 

South Africa's bowlers were in superb form with Anrich Nortje achieving career-best T20 figures of 4 wickets in 7 runs. Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj contributed with 2 wickets each effectively dismantling the Sri Lankan lineup. 

Chasing a modest target on a challenging surface South Africa's batters took a cautious approach. Quinton de Kock's 20 off 27 balls was the highest score, supported by Tristan Stubbs' patient 13 off 28 balls. Wanindu Hasaranga's efforts of 2-22 gave Sri Lanka a glimmer of hope but Heinrich Klaasen (19*) along with David Miller (6*) ensured South Africa reached the target with 22 balls to spare. 

Post-match, Heinrich Klaasen praised the efforts to prepare the field and expressed hope for improved pitch conditions as the tournament progresses.
